Roger Federer backed Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz to win multiple slams in future as the two youngsters have been at the top of their games for some time now.
Sinner is set to face Alcaraz at the 2024 Indian Wells semi-final on Saturday in what is going to be the biggest match of the tournament so far.
As the Spaniard is aiming to become the first player to defend the Indian Wells title since Novak Djokovic in 2016, the Italian is on a 19-match unbeaten streak, making their tie even more thrilling as both the players would be willing to give their all to succeed.
Federer, who won 20 Grand Slams in his legendary career, believed that both the players would win multiple majors in their careers.
“I don’t like to put the pressure on these players because honestly aiming for 20 [Grand Slam titles] was not something I did, Rafa [Nadal] did, or Novak [Djokovic] did,” Federer said.
“Of course, you have the players that you think are going to win multiple Slams. Somebody has to win Slams and naturally, they’re going to win them nicely and do it perfectly and they’re going to be the ones carrying the game and become the superstars of our sport, which some are already announcing themselves to do: Alcaraz, Sinner, and so forth.
“And there’s a lot of momentum right now also to see who’s going to be the next guy. So, I think the next two to three years, they’re going to give us a really good idea because I think there are good players right now, but I still think they are recalibrating their game to understand: Okay, how can I beat the best in the business on their best surface?”
Remember, Djokovic currently leads the Grand Slam race with 24 majors to his name. Rafael Nadal is second with 22 while Federer retired with 20 majors.
With Federer already retired and Djokovic and Nadal entering the last phase of their careers, it seems that the tennis throne will be passed to the new generation and one of Sinner or Alcaraz looks like the favourite to grab it.
